What is writing?

I absolutely believe that the four-letter word project is a form of writing. Writing is more than just documented text, it is something that should should make you feel. Writing a song, writing a list, even writing "I love you" on a piece of crumpled up paper can provoke the same amount of emotion that a whole novel can provide. The four letter word project is a perfect example of this. Although it was one word, it provoked immense amounts of emotions, the pictures just being a simple aid to show how powerful the word is. Words are the most powerful things that we have, and just to write one word down and have it provoke emotion is writing.

  1. Thank you for this intelligent post. I really love what you wrote. I had never characterized writing as anything that provokes emotion regardless of its length. I particularly liked how you said even writing "i love you" can provoke the same amount of emotion or thought that a novel can; it is so true. You have definitely swayed my opinion on whether or not this four letter word project was writing. Also, do you think that it depends on the reader ever? For example, someone may read a novel and be completely underwhelmed by it, while another may love it and be completely thought provoked, likewise with simply reading a note that says "i love you." Just a thought.

  2. Thank you for your wonderful post! I really agree with what you are saying about the project being writing. You describe it beautifully when you compare the project to a crumpled up piece of paper. I definitely think the montages, especially done well like yours, argue and express the same emotions and arguments. I also think it is interesting that you consider words to be the most powerful thing, even if it is just one word. But have you considered that maybe the montages, even without any words, would still be writing? After all, the earliest forms of writing were pictures and images on cave walls or in the dirt. Maybe just the pictures themselves are writing?

  3. Thank you for your insightful post! Hey have you thought about the actual images of the project? The reason I ask this is because there's a difference between the one word we used and the countless images being used to defend our argument. You might want to look into this idea of the actual images. I do really appreciate your decisiveness in this post, you have a clear and determined opinion. Thank you!
